One reason some travelers pick an all inclusive resort is that drinks are included: beer, cocktails, specialty coffees, and wine at some resorts.
Here is what you need to know:
Wine - Not all resorts include wine in the all inclusive package. Those that do usually source their wine from Chile. The resorts usually have a couple reds or a couple whites. The exception to this is higher end resorts like Grand Velas, Le Blanc, or Sandals. If wine is very important to you, I recommend working with the resort to pre-purchase wine you like or let me know so I can match you with the best resort when I plan your vacation.
“Domestic liquors and beers” - If you are looking at a list of resort inclusions, you may see the phrase “domestic liquors and beers”. This means domestic to the country you are visiting. If you are in the Dominican Republic, this means Dominican Republic liquors or beers. You may not recognize any of the labels. If you want liquors or beers you recognize from the United States, you’ll want to look for all inclusive resorts with “imported” or “premium” liquors available.
You’ll only get the liquors on display if you ask for them. Most bars at an all inclusive resort will display premium liquors behind the bar on shelves. The bartenders won’t automatically make your cocktail with those liquors. Be sure to call your liquor. Instead of saying “gin and tonic”, say “Bombay and tonic”.
Customize your mini bar. Many resorts include a mini bar with beer, soda, water, and juice in the room. Others may include bottles of liquor. You can request to customize your mini bar. If you want all Coca Cola and no Fanta, ask for it.
Have a list of drinks you want to try. This is a great opportunity to try drinks you’ve heard of, but never tried. Aperol Spritz. Negroni. Bloody Mary with Bourbon instead of vodka. Ten different types of mojito.
Ask the bartender. You can also take advantage of the bartender’s expertise. In Mexico, we tried a Paloma instead of a margarita because we asked a bartender how he drinks tequila. On a rainy day, we had a little educational session on blanco versus reposado versus anejo tequila and mezcal. Now, do not do this at the swim up bar where there are 25 people waiting for a drink. That is not the time. Take advantage if you happen across a bar that’s not too busy.
And it wouldn’t be info on drinks at all inclusive bars without talking about Yetis. I think almost every packing list out there includes bringing some type of insulated cup. I don’t. I don’t have the room in my luggage. I also tend to hang out at the swim up bar so it’s easy to get another drink. If you hang out at the beach or are visiting a resort without beach or pool service, you may want one. It will be larger than the cups at the resort and keep your drink cold.
What about you? What are your go to vacation cocktails? Do you bring an insulated cup with you?
Cheers!
